Lake Benmore

Top Fishing spot - The most fished lake of any Fish & Game region. Divided by the Benmore Range into two arms – the Haldon Arm, which is situated close to Twizel, and the smaller Ahuriri Arm, which is close to Omarama. The Tekapo and Lower Ohau Rivers and their tributaries provide clear inflows at the head of the Haldon Arm however glacial flows from the hydro canal which enter the lake through Ohau ‘C’ tailrace provides the blue grey water for which it is well known.
Lake Benmore is regarded highly by anglers for the size and condition factors of  brown trout and rainbow trout it produces. Fishing the  lake  with natural bait, spin fishing or fly fishing. It is open year-round, is easily accessible by formed roads and there are several camping grounds around both arms of the  lake.

Ahuriri River

Arguably the most scenic and most productive of the high countrytrout  fishing  rivers in the Central South Island Fish & Game Region. It is an internationally renowned trout fishing spot, providing habitat for both brown trout and rainbow trout. The river is accessible for much of its length by formed roads off SH8 near Omarama. All access points along the upper Ahuriri River are well sign posted.
There are Holiday Parks at Omarama and Twizel. The river can be fished by spin fishing or fly fishing. The lower river opens on the first Saturday in November. The upper river opens on the first Saturday in December.
