Motueka River

Located 50km west of Nelson, the Motueka River supports one of the highest trout populations in New Zealand; the river is nationally recognised and protected by a Water Conservation Order. It has numerous signed Fish & Game angler access points off the roads which run along both sides of the river’s banks. Early in the season (starting October 1) trout often hold deep so spin fishing  can be effective. Fish & Game NZ has excellent access information on the Motueka, with detailed maps and fisihing tips available for download from the Fish & Game NZ website here. There is ample accommodation of all types in the area.

Lake Rotoroa

Only 1 hour drive from Nelson, Lake Rotoroa is still relatively remote and scenically stunning with lofty mountain peaks, crystal clear water and forest down to the lake edge. It can easily be fished from the road end, well-defined tracks or take a water taxi to the numerous trout fishing locations on offer. Spin fishing is very effective, particularly where streams and rivers flow into the lake or where the Gowan River leaves. There is a small settlement at the road end with some accommodation and a nearby campground.
