Hutt River

Superb brown trout fishing, just 15 minutes’ drive from Wellington City. The Hutt River  is the largest of the Wellington rivers and dominates angling interest. Access is easy with riverside parks or access tracks along most of its length. In general anglers fish “blind” and cover the water rather than fish to sighted fish. The current regulations on this river allow fly fishing and spin fishing, with a daily bag limit of 2 trout and a maximum size limit of 450mm.
This river is open all year round for trout  fishing and, being so close to urban centres, there are ample options for accommodation and other facilities.

Rangitikei River

'"Trophy rainbow and brown trout ' - The Rangitikei River is regarded by many as the ‘jewel in the crown’ of the Wellington Fish and Game region. Most of its 241km length provides excellent fishing, ranging from ‘trophy’ rainbow trout and brown trout in wilderness surroundings to estuary dwelling sea-runs. The many kilometres of accessible middle and lower reaches are the most popular with year-round trout fishing available. Access is readily available with many roads leading off SH1 near Taihape through to Bulls. Spin fishing is very popular, particularly with Veltics, Dandy’s, Rapala’s and ‘Z’ spinners.

Manawatu River

This is another outstanding brown and rainbow trout fishing river. Almost all of the trout fishing is done between Dannevirke and Palmerston North. It has 170km of fishable water that flows in a south-westerly direction, beginning north of the township of Dannevirke, past Woodville, Ashhurst, Palmerston North and Foxton. Access is readily available from a number of roads either paralleling or leading to the river over most of its length. Above the Maunga Road Bridge (upstream of Dannevirke) the river is closed for fishing from April 30 to October 1. Below the Maunga Road Bridge there no daily bag limit.
