Arnold River

Exits Lake Brunner before joining the Grey River 15kms from Greymouth at Stillwater. Holds a high population of medium-sized brown trout. Access is obtained at numerous marked points along the Arnold Valley Rd between Stillwater and Moana. Fly fishing for brown trout is favoured but all methods are successful.

Lake Brunner

Fishing for Brown trout - 25km from Greymouth. Follow SH7 to Stillwater then turn onto the Arnold Valley Rd to Moana. Lake Brunner holds brown trout averaging 1.1kg and is the most popular angling water in the region. Foot access is available at Moana (across the Arnold River footbridge) and Iveagh Bay. At the south end of the lake access to Carew Bay and Bain Bay can be obtained via the track starting at the boat ramp. Fly fishing from the shore at the lake outlet during early morning or late evening is effective; the best spin fishing is at the lake outlet or along the western shore where the water is a little deeper.

Hokitika River

Easy access is available in the lower reaches of the river close to Hokitika township. Here it holds 1-2kg brown trout and sea-run trout early season. The middle reaches are accessible off Kokatahi Rd which leads through Kowhiterangi to the Hokitika Gorge. Rainbow trout are present in the upper reaches and in the Whitcombe tributary. Accessible mid-section tributaries include Kokatahi, Styx and Toaroha River.
